We had such a treat mid-July - Grammie and Grandpa (Ted & Jan) came to visit! It's a long drive between us, so we were so grateful that they took the hit and made the trek up here. The girls LOVED their visit! Being showered with gifts didn't hurt, but truth be told they were über excited before they even arrived.
The girls received matching Strawberry Shortcake costumes! They gave Madeline a sticker book, too. Hmm, dress-ups and stickers, for a preschooler? Yup, Grammie and Grandpa are her favorite people now!
They gave Madeline her birthday present early - a LeapPad! She calls it her Kindle (I received one for Christmas, and she's always asking to play with it. Now she says she has her own.).
Once Daddy set it up, she quickly discovered the picture-taking and movie-making abilities. Those, combined with the touch-screen, make this the most sophisticated piece of technology we own! She LOVES to take pictures with it now (though she spends more and more time with the games, too). Great find, guys!

Do you notice the Elsa (from Frozen) costume that Madeline is sporting in the picture above? She has hardly taken it off since they gave it to her. Frozen fever has DEFINITELY infected this house! Caleb and I have lost sleep some nights just because we CAN'T GET THE SONGS OUT OF OUR HEADS.
So, naturally, Madeline asked for a Frozen birthday party this year. Her favorite character is Elsa (we found later that she's the most-popular choice, and therefore most stores are sold out of her merchandise!), so we built the theme around her. If you haven't seen the movie, it's primarily about the love between two sisters. Anna (her color is purple) is a "regular" girl, while Elsa (her color is light blue) has magical ice powers.
We couldn't find Elsa in any of the nearby stores! Fortunately, a neighbor-friend also had Elsa on her cake and was sweet enough to let us borrow her. We made snowflakes to go up around the house (not pictured) and a few leftover for the table.
Madeline with her Frozen cake! (She got a black eye just a few days before the party. Here it's covered with some makeup, but you can still see a dark line under her right eye. She was hit in the face with a swing!)
The girls made necklaces with big, clear plastic beads and little blue pony beads. And just like that, they're "Elsa" necklaces!
Our craft-oriented little girl was the first to the table, and last to finish. :)
We found directions online for a Frozen-themed treasure hunt. The kids had a blast figuring out the clues and running all over the house to find the next one! They had just finished the clue "I mean it's crazy - we finish each other's ______ (sandwiches)" which took them to the bread in the pantry. Other clues consisted of various lines from the movie, like "Love is an open ____ (door)" "Do you want to build a snowman? Or ride our bikes around the _____ (halls)?" So much fun!
Caleb even made an Olaf pinata!
"Hi! I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!"
...And yes, he EVEN let the kids whack the pinata with a bat! (What you don't know is that he built Olaf with a wire frame and ducttape, and held the pinata high enough so no one could hit Olaf's face. With a few minor repairs, Olaf will go up in Madeline's room as a decoration!)
Even little sisters got in on the fun!
