(She's going to kill me someday for posting this picture!)
While I don't want to jinx it, I think we can safely say we're on track to be totally potty trained soon. ("Soon" being a relative word, of course!) We decided to try again over Christmas break so that we could take advantage of both of us being around to work on it. We loaded on the rewards - she could get "chocolate" (M&Ms) if she successfully went, plus we'd make a huge deal over her successes and give her a "punch" on a punch card. We told her that if she went pee pee or poop 5 times, she could pick out a new toy at Target (got to love the One-Spot, huh?). Well, that was all well and good, but then we had her friend, Lena, over to play. Lena is about to turn 2 and has been potty training, too. Madeline saw Lena use her potty two or three times while visiting us, and she declared that she wanted to sit on the potty!! Yay!!!! Peer pressure WORKS! Anyway, since then she's been having more and more success.
(Notice the "big girl panties"?)
We praise her everytime she successfully goes on the potty ("Yay! You went pee pee on the potty!"), and now she often responds, "Just like you friend, Lena!"
Lena and Madeline.
We were walking around in the Mall of America when she suddenly asked, "Mommy, you not a baby anymore?"
"No, I'm not!"
"You just a Mommy?"
"Yeah. Kind of..." (we'll have to discuss this "just a Mommy" thing some other time)
"Man-in [Madeline] not a baby. I a big girl and go 'look, I go pee pee on potty!'"
Sometimes we feel like she never listens, but then she'll say something that shows that she does, indeed, hear what we say. Such as her exclamation the other day, "Oh goodnesses!" Or when we told her we were on our way to walk around the mall, and she declared, "Yay! We see BOYS there!" (Uh oh!)
Or when Caleb told her it was time to put the Christmas decorations away, and he asked her if she wanted to help take the ornaments off the tree. She told him very loudly, "NO!! My Mommy says we don't touch them!!"
And then there was the time Madeline was sitting down on the potty and Caleb set up a DVD episode of "Madeline" for her (remember the Madeline books?). The DVD player reset itself, causing Caleb to say, "Oh no!" Madeline put her hand on his knee and told him, "It's OK, calm down. Don't cry." Then the player turned back on, and she asked him, "Does that feel better?"
It's also getting harder and harder to fool her. As a reward for going potty a certain number of times, she got to pick out a toy (we love that one-spot at Target!). She chose markers, which weren't quite as washable as they claimed. Unless we're willing to supervise her with them, we've started "losing" them until later. Yesterday I realized that she knows exactly what we're doing!
"Do you know where my markers is?"
"No, do you?" (As parents, we lie through our teeth a LOT, don't we?)
"My Mommy and Daddy take them."
(Trying for a different explanation) "They're hiding, huh?"
"No, they just take them."
For her part, Olivia is a VERY happy baby. This little one even likes being on her tummy - something Madeline HATED!! We put her on her tummy for "tummy time" and she just puts her head down, just chilling.
I guess we'll have to work on those tummy and arm muscles another way!
She's pretty good at making faces, too! She can be very playful for only 2 1/2 months old...
Can you see the bubbles around her mouth? That's actually from coughing a lot. :(
Please remember the kids in your prayers, especially Olivia. This hasn't settled in her ears or lungs (Praise God!!), but of course we don't want it to get any worse. Plus the poor thing coughs so violently and keeps choking on the phlegm/mucus, and cuddles and steam-showers can only do so much to help.
